Birth Anniversary of U.V. Swaminatha Iyer 

  • Uttamadhanapuram Venkatasubbaiyer Swaminatha Iyer  was a Tamil scholar and researcher who was instrumental in bringing many long-forgotten works of classical Tamil literature to light.
  • His singular effort over five decades brought to light major literary works in Tamil and contributed vastly to the enrichment of its literary heritage.
  • He is affectionately called Tamil Thatha(Grandfather of Tamil).

Early life

  • Utthamadhanapuram Venkatasubramanian Swaminathan was born on 19 February 1855 in the village of Suriaymoolai near Kumbakonam in present-day Tamil Nadu.
  • Swaminatha Iyer learned Tamil literature and grammar for five years as a devoted student to Mahavidwan Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai, a great poet and scholar.
  • Another significant contribution made by Swaminatha Iyer is in the realm of Tamil music.
  • In 1919 UV Swaminatha Iyer retired and later he joined as a principal in Meenakshi Tamil College, Kumbakonam.

  • In 1906, UV Swaminatha Iyer got honorary Doctoral Degree by the University of Madras.

  • In 1940-42 Auto biography of UV Swaminatha Iyer En Sarithiram got published in Ananda Vikadan Tamil Weekly magazine and 1950 it was published as a book.

  • Cilapathigaram written by Ilango Adigal , one of five epic in ancient Tamil Literature, Manimegalai written by Seethalai Saathanar, one of the five Epic in ancient Tamil Litreature and Parananuru, one of the Pathinen melkanakku books of Sangam Period written by more than 150 poets, are published by UV Swaminatha Iyer .

Death

Due to health problem he resigned his job in 1927 and he involved in manu scripting, Editing and publishing until his death on 28th April 1942.
