GoI enacted three Acts to revamp agriculture sector & increase farmer’s revenue. The Government of India has enacted three Acts with an objective to revamp agriculture sector in the country and increase farmer’s income. Additionally President Ram Nath Kovind gave assent to Jammu & Kasmir Official Languages Bill, 2020.

The Three acts are:

1) Farmer’s Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020

2) The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020

3) The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020

Farmer’s Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020:

  • This act builds an ecosystem where the farmers and traders will enjoy freedom of choice of sale and purchase of Agri-produce.
  • It will also promote barrier-free inter-state and intra-state trade and commerce outside the physical premises of markets notified under State Agricultural Produce Marketing legislations.
  • This is a historic-step in unlocking the vastly regulated agriculture markets in the country.

Farmer’s Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 PDF

The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020:

  • It will give provisions to farmers for engaging with processors, wholesalers, aggregators, wholesalers, large retailers, exporters on a level playing field without any fear of exploitation.
  • It will transfer the risk of market unpredictability from the farmer to the sponsor and also enable the farmer to access modern technology and better inputs
  • It will reduce cost of marketing and improve income of farmers.

The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020:

  • It permits the Central Government of India to manage the supply of food items including potatoes and pulses only under extraordinary circumstances such as war and famine.
  • It also has an objective of liberalising the regulatory system while protecting the interests of consumers.
