Important Events Of November 12
World Pneumonia Day
- World Pneumonia Day (November 12) provides an annual forum for the world to stand together and demand action in the fight against pneumonia. More than 100 organizations representing the interests of children joined forces as the Global Coalition against Child Pneumonia to hold the first World Pneumonia Day on 2 November 2009.
- Save The Children artist ambassadors Gwyneth Paltrowand Hugh Laurie, Charles Mac Cormack of Save The Children, Orin Levine of Pneumo ADIP, Lance Laifer of Hedge Funds vs. Malaria & Pneumonia, the Global Health Council, the GAVI Alliance, and the Sabin Vaccine Institute joined together in a call to action asking people to participate in World Pneumonia Day on 2 November. In 2010, World Pneumonia Day falls on 12 November.
National Youth Day in East Timor
- East Timor annually celebrates Notional Youth Day on November 12. Institution of this holiday is connected with a grieving event in the history of the country.
- East Timor declared independence from Portugal in 1975, but after that it was occupied by Indonesia. This event started the war of independence in East Timor, that lasted for 25 years.
- On November 12, 1991 thousands of people attended the funeral of Sebastião Gomes, a supporter of independence of East Timor.
- They walked from the Motael Church to the nearby Santa Cruz cemetery and soon the funeral service became a demonstration for independence.
- The funeral was observed by the Indonesian army. The troops started attacking and shooting demonstrators, killing around 250 people.
- The massacre was witnessed and filmed by two American journalists and a British television presenter. Later it was broadcast on British television and it caused the wave of outrage around the world.
